Transition to IFRA 51 Standards: Compliance Timeline and Requirements

The transition to IFRA 51 standards marks one of the most significant changes in the fragrance industry in terms of safety and regulatory compliance. Published by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), this updated standard officially entered into force on August 16, 2023.

IFRA 51 introduces major innovations, particularly regarding allergen restrictions, formulation revisions, and labeling requirements. Compared to IFRA 50, the new standard defines and restricts a greater number of allergenic substances, with new usage limits especially for natural-derived ingredients. Additionally, the Cosing database updates on allergen labeling represent one of the most critical differences.

This transition impacts not only production processes but also labeling, packaging design, and marketing strategies. Therefore, businesses must carefully plan their compliance strategies, as doing so is crucial for both legal conformity and global competitiveness.
