A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) — also referred to as a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) — is a technical document that provides comprehensive information on the health, safety, and environmental effects of the chemical substances contained in a product. It is a critical tool for supporting safe product usage and ensuring regulatory compliance throughout the product lifecycle.
In both domestic and international trade of chemical-based products, MSDS documents must be carefully prepared to meet technical and legal requirements.
Yes. There is a widely accepted update cycle for MSDS documents that aligns with sector regulations:
MSDS documents must be updated at least every five (5) years from the date of issue — even if there have been no changes in product composition. Updates may be required due to new toxicological data, reclassification of substances, or revised legal requirements.
However, any changes in the product’s composition, classification, or the emergence of new toxicological/scientific findings require the MSDS to be immediately revised, regardless of the 5-year window.
This approach ensures the accuracy and relevance of the information provided to key stakeholders — particularly those involved in occupational safety, environmental management, and product stewardship.
Failure to present a valid MSDS during audits or inspections may result in legal penalties, especially under occupational health and safety enforcement.
Which Regulations Govern MSDS Preparation in Türkiye? In Türkiye, MSDS preparation is carried out in compliance with the EU REACH Regulation and is supervised by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change.
Relevant Turkish Regulation:
Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (KKDİK)
Official Gazette Date: June 23, 2017 – Issue No: 30105
REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006
These regulations form a global framework for registering hazardous chemicals, ensuring their safe use, and protecting human health and the environment.
Amendment 2020/878/EU
As of 2023, an important regulation in Türkiye mandates that:
MSDS documents must be prepared and digitally signed only by a certified Chemical Safety Assessor (KDUF).
These assessors are certified through official training and examinations authorized by the Ministry.
Thanks to this regulation:
MSDS content is scientifically and technically validated,
The document gains legal standing,
It increases acceptability in international trade.
An MSDS is not only a legal requirement — it is also a reflection of your product’s professional credibility. Here’s why it matters:
Ensures the accuracy of chemical classifications and hazard statements
Helps users prevent potential health risks
Facilitates compliance with import/export regulations
Supports safe storage, transportation, and disposal
Serves as a key reference in occupational health and safety training
