Accelerated Stability Test Data
Accelerated stability testing aims to ensure that a cosmetic product meets the intended physical, chemical and microbiological quality standards, as well as functionality and aesthetics. By conducting appropriate stability testing, manufacturers can identify the physical and chemical vulnerabilities of their products early, allowing manufacturers to make necessary adjustments to the formula or final product to avoid marketing non-conforming products and consumer complaints. Therefore, cosmetic manufacturers benefit greatly from the inclusion of routine stability testing in the life cycle of their products. By gathering critical information about different formulas and final products, manufacturers can develop better products and establish shipping and storage conditions.

Acceptance conditions: Samples are evaluated in comparison with the standard sample (which must remain unchanged throughout the entire life cycle of the product) and with products considered “reference” that have been subjected to the same testing conditions. Generally, acceptance limits are defined for the evaluated parameters. Interpretation of data obtained during Stability Testing depends on criteria established according to the experience of the formulator.

Acceptability Criteria
  • Appearance: The product must hold itself intact throughout the duration of the test, retaining its initial appearance under all conditions other than high and low temperatures or cycles where minor variations are acceptable.
  • Color and odor should remain stable when exposed to sunlight. Small changes are acceptable at high temperatures.
  • Viscosity acceptability limits should be defined by the formulator, taking into account the visual and sensory perceptions caused by the changes. The possibility that consumers may also notice these should be taken into account.
  • Compatibility with the contained material, integrity of the packaging and formulation, weight, sealing and functionality should be taken into account when evaluating.
  • In cases where it is necessary to monitor the percentage of active ingredient, the quality and performance parameters of the product should be taken into account.

IN WHICH CASES ARE STABILITY TESTS PERFORMED FOR COSMETICS?
  • In developing a new product;
  • In reformulating an existing market product;
  • Changing the production method or
  • Changing the production location or changing the manufacturer
  • When changing packaging
  • It is necessary to perform or repeat the stability test.
